Perhaps he cannot be blamed for the lack of originality in writing. It is almost as if you are watching a stereotypical Army guy of Bollywood – well mannered, suave and confident. Pulkit Samrat walks through his role of the Captain in the Army, adding nothing to his character. It is almost formulaic, as if set in a mould. The direction by Vivek Agnihotri disappoints, as it appears staged and theatrical.

The dialogues, touted to be full of poetry as well, seem bland and uninspiring. It is lazily crafted, and the characters are flimsy and lack depth. The screenplay too is a staid fare, with songs thrown in intermittently, to make it seem frothy and entertaining, and to showcase the romance, but it fails to uplift the film. There is a feeling of deja vu throughout. With the quintessential ingredients of weddings, railway platform scene, runaway bride, songs and the archetypical Army guy, Junooniyat becomes tedious to watch. There is no madness in their love story and consequently, no magic. Their junooniyat or obsession is clearly missing.

The couple is sensible, practical and perhaps the very antithesis of what lovers should be. The opposition to their love story seems weak and inconsequential. The fact that it makes you revisit it even after repeat hearing is a good enough reason to pick this one up.There is no element of surprise, no interesting twists and not even a heart-wrenching love story which tugs at your heart strings. The music of Junooniyat comes across as a good inclusion in the current Bollywood scene. Moreover, it has been picturised well too and though there are clichéd moments in there, they do well for a quintessential Bollywood love song.

A soaked-in-sugar-n-saccharine number, right from lyrics (Manoj Muntashir) to the manner in which Ankit sings this one along with Tulsi Kumar, it has a free flowing feel to it which makes it quite easy on ears. The album concludes with a much better song though, what with Amkit Tiwari bringing on a lovelorn number 'Ishqe De Lat'. For now though, it just comes across as 'fitting into the narrative' song. The song is not bad but one just wishes that overall as a composition it was a lot more consistent and seamless. This isn't all as Kumaar integrates Hindi and English lyrics into this song which has 'bhaang' joining revelries with 'nasha' and 'ghoont' making a mandatory appearance.

A 'desi' track which has Meet Bros pair up with Khushboo Grewal, it takes quite a few variations before settling down on the hook-line. What comes next actually breaks the melodious flow of music as Meet Bros Anjjan put together a dance number 'Pagalon Sa Naach'. It would be interesting to see how this one is picturised for screen. Akriti Kakar joins towards the end and makes her presence felt. Shrey Singhal sings this one in a style which reminds you of Atif Aslam at places.

Yet again, lyrics are integrated well into the composition as Manoj Muntashir gets poetic for this piece which has a Western fusion element to it. Tagged as the 'Climax song', this one has the kind of intensity and pace which befits the point of the narrative where it is meant to arrive.

Jeet Gannguli continues to do well in the album while bringing the title song 'Tu Junooniyat' next. Very well written, excellently composed and wonderfully sung by Armaan Malik, this one is also picturised beautifully and is deserving to be played on a repeat mode. A beautiful song which is also one of the best to come out of Bollywood this year, this Rashmi Virag written number could well join the ranks of love anthems of 2016. Well, if you loved the title song of Sanam Re then you would definitely pick this one up as well. What further catches your attention is Jeet Gannguli's 'Mujhko Barsaat Bana Lo'. What could have been avoided? Well, yet another mention of 'daaru' and 'club' via rap portions by Meet Bros. The song manages to establish an instant connect yet again and new lyrics by Kumaar fit in well too, hence resulting in a definite chartbuster which has Meet Bros Anjjan coming together as composers. What really works is the seamless integration that takes place immediately with 'Nachange Saari Raat' that has Neeraj Sridhar taking charge. Stereo Nation's 'Nachange Saari Raat' is brought into a new avtar with Tulsi Kumar kick-starting the proceedings in her naughty avtar. Now that the same team is back with Vivek Agnihotri as the director, in Junooniyat, expectations are quite high as you look forward to a melodic soundtrack. The film's music turned out to be an instant chartbuster and is played even till date. Junooniyat Review & Review RatingĮarlier this year when Pulkit Samrat and Yami Gautam came together in a T-Series film, the result was Sanam Re.
